Back in 1997, when the original Diablo launched, I had just secured a monster Compaq home computer powered by a 166mhz Pentium processor, and I was exploring all that PC gaming had to offer. Just pure gameplay with itself as the reward.Diablo is a franchise that holds a lot of meaning to me. I didn't need to progress through career mode, didn't need to farm for any rare drops etc. It was a great and rewarding play session, yet it all took place over the course of 30 minutes. Playing that way made me appreciate the handling model as well - arcade-like, very sensitive and demaning focus. I raced 4 tracks against the AI, and only even placed in the top 3 once, the rest of the times coming 4th or 5th, but I had an awesome time doing it. It made me start to think more about the care that went into the placement of the turns, the way the designers would have anticipated what speed you'd hit each corner at and where you might be trying to overtake, and so on. Usually during a quick race you try your hardest to beat all the competitors but I was feeling lazy and started to pay extra attention to the trackside details, the layouts etc. I had the same feeling this morning while playing PSP Sega Rally on my PS Vita.
